About the event

Participate in one of the following three workshops ; engage in post-workshop affinity conversations; win one of nine amazing books given as draw prizes.

Workshop 1: Awareness, Advocacy, Activism

We argue that critical literacy, culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy, and historically responsive literacy encompass what we need to raise critical readers who read the word and the world. (Gay 2018 et al.) Join us to explore Asian Canadian Perspectives to facilitate advocacy for those who are “othered”, and to cultivate readers who will embrace activism. Target audience: elementary educators

Workshop 2: Forum for Senior/ Secondary Educators

As educators, we are learners who recognize that cultural expertise is diverse and lies in the lived experiences of students and their families. To understand what makes each student unique, celebrate who they are and the contributions Asian people have made to Canada, let us come together to incorporate Asian Canadian perspectives in teaching and learning, and our commitment to inclusive classrooms and schools.

Workshop 3: Parents: Proactive Actors in Education

1 in 4 young Canadians belong to a racialized community and half of all racialized students experience racism at school – usually through racial stereotypes, social exclusion, and hostile words and behaviors (Ngo 2020). This workshop focuses on constructive parent engagement strategies and the role Asian Canadian parents can play in addressing systemic structural bias, at the same time, build your children's identity and belonging.

The above workshops will introduce ACENet's recently released Asian Canadian Perspectives Resource for Educators to address underrepresentation in learning. https://bit.ly/3l9mw9P
